September - Angel Island and the start of the Fleet Week Air Show

On Sept 21st I took a day trip to Angel Island. This is the uninhabited island that takes up 1/3 of my view of San Francisco Bay. At night it is a light-less mass in between brightly lit inhabited portions of Marin County.

The Ferry was $14 round trip. there are two concentric roads, one a paved perimeter road that goes through ghost towns of old military & other government installations. Moderately challenging with some steep hills around the island. You hike or bike up the mountain to get to the unpaved fire road.

This is mostly level and makes for excellent bike riding. The top of Mt. Livermore is off-limits to bikes, you hike to the tip, almost 800' high for excellent views of the city & the bay. Yes, ther e are 'Segway' tours of the Island, Segways outfitted with Monster-Truck Tires. ...only in San Francisco...

The ships in the harbor are two museums. One, the Merchant Marine Ship served in World War II. JEREMIAH O'BRIEN LIBERTY SHIP, EC2-S-C1 TYPE, the last active survivor of the D-Day invasion of Europe in 1944

The Submarine is also a museum.

USS Pampanito (SS-383) is a World War II Balao class Fleet submarine museum and memorial that is open for visitors daily at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Pampanito made six patrols in the Pacific during World War II during which she sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others.

On Sept 26th I saw the following taking place outside my window:

This is practice for 'Fleet Week' A week of Air shows over San Francisco Harbor.
